I fucking won?!

Well, holy shit. A lot has happened since the last update. Most notably I won the custom munny competition. It took me by surprise completely as there were some excellent entries. I am super stoked and a little shocked to be honest, I got showered with goodies for winning and it was all a little overwhelming. The extreme heat probably added to that though!
The guys at laced were crazily generous with the prizes, and the freebie door prizes flowed freely also. It was a good afternoon all around bar the opressive heat, but there were free drinks at hand. The announcement was very sudden and they announced first place, first. I initially thought I had gotten third which was great to begin with then I realised he had said first. Unfortunately we didn’t go to the after party (or Aimee’s drinks, sorry Aimee!) , as it was ridiculously hot and I was still suffering from a work Christmas party from the previous day. I need to keep some of the mystery, I can’t let the art world know I’m a common belligerant drunkard just yet.
Anyway enough talk, here is the final munny before i took it in. I had to scrap the mauled dunny accessory because I ran out of time, but I ended up being really happy with the rest. Belinda helped me workshop some ideas for the eyes which helped a lot. Thanks babe!
Being the materialistic folk we are (myself completely included), the most common question I’ve had so far is what did you win? Well, a lot of rad stuff!
- Incase X DC backpack. This thing is mental, it’s got everything you could ever want in a backpack and more. Apparently they sold for mucho dollars and i can see why.
- 20 inch blank munny. Even thinking of painting this thing stresses me out, it’s huge!
- Gravis wooden robot. I’m not sure of the story behind this one, it’s very cute though.
- Vans Skate Hi perforated leather. I’ve never owned vans before, these are a really nice clean shoe. I fact had already come close to buying them on an earlier occasion.
- A gravis backpack, smaller than the other one, still very nice indeed.
- A pair of New Balance 574’s (not pictured) which are on their way apparently, again, I’ve never owned NB so it will be cool to get some.
- A bunch of t-shirts and hats.
Thanks again Laced! If you want to see some pictures from the gallery, including other entries and me looking awkward and flustered, hit up our flickr page.
Most importantly this has given me confidence to keep trying my art outside of the nerd arena, I’m not sure what I am going to do next, but I’m going to do it for myself! I am extremely discombobulated today, forgive me if this post is lacking in coherence and quality.
Mind on my munny

The head is getting closer and closer to completion, a few little details left to clean and purty it up a notch and then it’s flocking time. I’ve really had to cut corners and I know i could do a lot better, but I’m going to be happy with just finishing it at this stage. I figure most people will have time contraints to deal with as well.
The bags under the eyes are modelled after my own on-call for over a week chic.
I get munny

Haven’t I been a busy boy? Well, sort of. I didn’t quite get as much as I would like done this weekend but I did get a good amount out of the way. The face is getting closer and closer to completion, all that really needs to be done is to put some bags under the eyes, paint the bitten ear plus a few small other details to tie it together and clean it up. Then it’s flocking time. OK, maybe not the close…
The perspective on this first shot is funny, wide face! You get the idea though.
I actually started work on the rest of the body too. Well, it got spray painted. The body is going to be far less detailed than the head, but that’s pretty standard with these things. To put it in perspective, the head’s bigger than the body. Belinda made me a rad denim vest out of a pair of some old jeans of mine, I think I might paint a design on the back that is in theme with the title of the munny, which I’m not telling what it is yet. A poor old dunny has been sacrificed as an accessory, and I hope I have time to paint it before friday.
I think it will be finished in time, though I know it’s not going to be as good as I can do. Cutting corners because of time constraints along with learning mistakes are taking their toll. All good lesson’s for next time, if there is one.
You’ve got something on your face

Face wound is nearly finished, I am starting to feel like I may actually make in time and not be embarrassed by my creation. The picture lightened the colours a lot, I guess that’s what i get for using a $15 kmart lamp for lighting.
Life aint’ nothing but brushes and munny

I can’t shake the feeling that if I actually finish this munny by next Friday, mine is going to look like the ’special achievement’ award contender when compared to all the graf artists that are going to be putting in their ‘fresh’ and perhaps ‘dope’ pieces. I’ll see how it looks in a weeks time. I’ll probably submit it, but I don’t know if I will go to the party for fear of being wedgied.
Self doubt aside, I completely repainted the blue-grey colour, as the last one just wasn’t working out. I’m much happier with the new one. I hate this stage of painting, base coat after base coat, It’s heaps of work for very little reward. Detail painting did start today, with the painting of the teeth (not gums etc, just the choppers) and I’m quite happy with them. I am going for the dry and dirty look as opposed to the fresh and bloody one might expect, Mr Munny is inbetween meals if you will. He’s going to have enough of the rich red kroovy splattered about the place as it is.
CHOMPERS:
I fear before long I will run out of munny puns.
Mo’ munny, mo’ problems

Work continued on the Munny today. I started with filling in the ear bite and sculpting the teeth marks (the ears are hollow too) which was followed by waiting all day for it to dry. That completed the sculpting stage of the head, which meant it was time for spray paint. Not the best day for it today with the extreme wind about, but a few close calls aside it went ok.
I’ve started putting paint on, it’s scary as it’s been a long time since I have worked with such smooth flat surfaces. Colour consistency and brush marks are troubling me. I’ve always mixed my own colours but i’m questioning that choice here. I feel like such a noob again. There is plenty more detail work to come and this is just a base coat so hopefully it smooths out in the end. At the very least it should be only noticeable up close away from detail areas like the eyes and mouth etc.
Pictures!
I’m not made of munny

Time to start using this blag.
Laced, a most excellent Brisbane streetwear and lifestyle store is having a custom munny competition to kick off their new gallery which will soon host local artists work. Good on them for supporting local talent, it’s things like this that will slowly but surely change Brisbane from the redneck wonderland it is.
I am using this comp as an excuse to break out of my ‘artistic comfort zone’ of painting warhammer and other nerdly models and into something a little fresher and will allow me to have more freedom. Honestly, I had become very bored with painting mini’s, I haven’t painted in months. I’m very proud of some of my stuff, but I’m always a little embarrassed talking about it to people. Anyway, I don’t want to dive in head first, so i’m making my first 7 inch munny a zombie. Part comfort zone, part scary and new.
I’ve been working on him sporadically for 3 nights now. It needs to be finished in about 2 weeks to make the show on the 6th of December. It’s going to be a bit rushed, but I think I would never have finished it without a deadline, it’s forcing me to cull ideas which will hopefully make it a more coherent piece overall. The word ‘piece’ makes me sound almost like a genuine artist, don’t you think? Watch out Damien Hirst.
No pics from day 1. Face sketched and started brain modelling.
Day 2: Brain modelling complete, half of the lips cut off for that exposed teeth look that’s in this season for zombies.
Day 3 involved taking a bite out the ear and half stuffing it, followed by adding the afformentioned wonky exposed teeth! An all brains diet does horrible things to ones teeth, being dead doesn’t help either.
This is my first time hacking and painting a munny, I never realised they were so hollow. It’s useful info to keep in mind for the future but for now I’ll just have to use plenty of green stuff. Props to Binny for ideas and keeping mine in check. More to come.
Nick.
